The Naval & Military Bible Society (NMBS) exists to share the Christian faith by providing Bibles and Christian resources to members of the Armed Forces, cadets, veterans, Merchant Navy personnel, and seafarers around the world. Since its founding in 1779, NMBS has sought to ensure that those who serve at sea and in military environments have access to God's Word, often in situations where spiritual support may be limited. Through partnerships with chaplains, welfare organizations, military units, cadet forces, maritime ministries, and churches, NMBS distributes Bibles free of charge, offering encouragement, hope, and spiritual guidance to those facing the unique pressures of service life.
The goal of NMBS is not simply to distribute books, but to make the Bible available as a source of faith, resilience, comfort, and personal transformation. The ministry seeks to support Christian discipleship, encourage spiritual wellbeing, and provide opportunities for individuals to explore the Christian faith wherever they serve.
Challenges: Like many charities, NMBS faces increasing financial pressures. Demand for Bibles and Christian resources remains strong, particularly among military personnel, cadets, seafarers, and international partners, but fundraising income is increasingly competitive. Rising printing, shipping, and distribution costs have also placed additional strain on resources.
A second challenge is raising awareness of the ministry's work among a new generation of supporters. While NMBS has a rich heritage and strong reputation, many people are unfamiliar with the continuing spiritual needs of those serving in military and maritime environments today.
Handling Challenges: NMBS is responding by strengthening relationships with churches, trusts, foundations, military chaplaincies, maritime ministries, and individual supporters. The charity is also investing in improved communications, digital engagement, and partnership development to broaden awareness and build long-term support.
To meet future opportunities, NMBS needs prayer, financial support, and strategic partnerships. Funding is required to continue providing free Bibles and Christian resources, particularly in areas of greatest need. The ministry also welcomes introductions to churches, grant-making trusts, military and maritime organisations, and individuals who share a passion for reaching service personnel and seafarers with the message of the Gospel.
With continued support, NMBS can expand its reach and ensure that God's Word remains available to those who serve their nations and work at sea, wherever they may be in the world.
