About This Partner

Omo’s Morningstar (OMS) is the recently established and registered Local Organization in accordance with Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Agency of Civil Societies Proclamation No. 1113/2019; with Registration No. 4785 on February 24th, 2020. The organization has child centered approach with a primary focus on marginalized and disadvantageous girls of the pastoral community. OMC come up with the project entitled on supporting education for Pastoralist Children of south Omo Zone. The thematic area of the organization is mainly for educational participation of children with particular focus of Girls in South Omo Zone.

There are various types of Harmful Traditional Practices in South Omo Zone. Most of them are exercised on women and children. In fact, such harmful traditional practices deter the growth and development of children . Particularly women in these area experience physical hardships throughout their lives. Such hardships include carrying heavy loads over long distances, grinding corn manually, working in the homestead, raising children, cooking food etc.

In addition, girls have traditionally suffered from socio-cultural and economic discrimination and have had fewer opportunities than boys for personal growth, education, and employment. The school participation of boys and girls are a wide gender parity index which the girl’s school participation is a lot less than boys.

OMS came about to support School age children with an initial focus on girls that will give them an opportunity to receive an education and to be raised in a safe environment. This is because they face great difficulties to attend school due to fear that the price for them as a future bride might be reduced or diminished by moving to a city and attending school there. Girls from pastoral families are especially vulnerable to this type of malpractice with these customs.
