About This Partner

Tearfund, an international relief and development agency, follows Jesus where the need is greatest, working through local churches across the Global South to unlock people's potential, helping them to discover that the answer to poverty is within themselves. When disasters strike, we respond quickly. We won't stop until poverty stops. Tearfund Canada is a nimble and efficient $9 million member of the worldwide Tearfund family and the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

Why give to this partner?

Inspired by Jesus' example and teaching, we recognize that people have profoundly interconnected material and spiritual needs. We seek to meet those needs by working through Nationally led local Christian networks across South Sudan, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and India, as well as among the First Peoples of Canada - primarily through the churches and faith-based organizations at the heart of their communities.

We specialize in 5 key areas of transformative work

  1. Church-based Community Transformation (CCT) is a unique model of development that works through the local church to restore the broken relationships at the root of poverty. We believe the church is the most effective vehicle for bringing opportunity and hope to the community.

  2. Humanitarian Aid in times of natural disasters, conflict and displacement, where we concentrate on food assistance in areas such as Gaza, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Haiti, Rohingya, Syria and Ukraine

  3. Helping communities increase resilience through food security and livelihood projects, specializing in conservation agriculture and women’s savings groups.

  4. Facilitating Biblically based Trauma healing of victims of Sexual Violence in conflict areas such as South Sudan, DR Congo and Ethiopia

  5. Training churches and communities about Creation Care and implementing large- and small-scale reforestation and creation care projects across the Global South.

In the past 10 years

  • over 68,000 small-holder (less than one acre in size) farm families have been trained in conservation agriculture, increasing yields 200- 500%

  • Over 121,000 women have participated in life-changing Village Savings and Loans Groups.

  • Over 360 churches have been trained in CCT and started at least community development projects themselves in some of the poorest areas of East Africa.

  • Over 150,000 people have received life-saving food assistance for at least 3 months.
