Serving Widows, Single Mothers, and Vulnerable Children in Zambia

In Zambia, countless widows, single mothers, and orphans face daily struggles for survival. Too often, children are left without the food, medical care, and education they need to thrive. Act Now Foundation exists to change that reality for the children and their caregivers.

We believe that God calls us to care for widows and orphans (James 1:27). We strengthen families and support single mothers so that children can remain in loving, stable homes. This approach restores dignity, protects family bonds, creates a loving community, and builds a foundation for long-term hope.

Demographics and Living Conditions

Zambia has one of the world's youngest populations, with a median age of 16.7 years and 53.4% under 18. About 60% of children live in poverty, and 41% face several hardships, including limited access to nutrition, education, and clean water. (UNICEF)

Children in Zambia continue to experience high levels of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation, including harmful practices such as child marriage and female genital mutilation. Preventing and responding to these issues requires a strong social services workforce to form the backbone of the child protection system. Currently, this is not the case in Zambia – the social service workforce is under-capacitated, and unable to meet the demand for child protection services. (UNICEF)

Kasinga’s Story

Kasinga lost both of her parents when she was very young and grew up in an orphanage. When she was released, her extended family neglected her and offered no support for her future. Now a young woman, Kasinga dreams of becoming a nurse so she can help others. But to qualify for nursing school, she must first rewrite her high school English course. The cost is about K3,000 ($200 CAD), an amount completely out of reach for her.

Today, Kasinga lives alone in a slum in Lusaka, surviving by baking and selling scones just to cover rent and basic needs. Without help, her dream of education and a stable future remains out of reach. Worse, her vulnerability leaves her at constant risk of being taken advantage of by predatory men.
