In 2007 a young lady from Canada came to the Jinja region of Uganda to volunteer. She was deeply moved by the poverty and soon felt called by God to do something about it, so eventually started an organization to help children attend school. She soon began sharing the need with friends and family back home and found support for 9 children. That marked the humble beginning of Andaba.
To date, friends and family have sponsored over 150 children, many of whom have successfully graduated and gone on to contribute positively to their communities.
In our ongoing journey, we have discussed a clear calling to expand our outreach into more communities in the Jinja district of Uganda. Along with education for children, we have expanded our reach to include several other are needed ministries to help communities survive and thrive. They are: Education, Health care, Safe housing, Water wells, Small Business Loans, Critical Care and Trade Schools.
We are rather unique among non-profit organization in that we are a local organization with no administration offices outside of Uganda, even though our financial support comes from Canada and the USA. As such, we are a member of The Great Commission Foundation (GCF). They keep us accountable for all donations and provide donation receipts for all gifts. This arrangement helps us to keep our overhead expenses at a minimum.
Andaba is a local word and it is commonly understood as meaning “God sees me”. We chose that name as a word of comfort and hope for the struggling communities we work with. God has their pain and together with them and the local churches, we are making strategic changes that can empower communities to break their cycle of poverty.
James 1:27 says “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress…” We are surrounded by orphans and widows and we are there to be faithful to God’s call and we invite you to join us. Together we can transform lives.
Praise God.
