Likoni, Mombasa, Kenya is where the poorest of the poor in Mombasa live. For over 20 years, Education for Life has been helping these underprivileged children and families by providing access to food, medical help, an education, and, in some cases, shelter. During this COVID-19 crisis, this help is needed more than ever. EFL (www.educationforlife.net) is the only charitable organization working in this area. The lockdown imposed means people here have no jobs and no money to buy food or medical supplies. EFL’s long term presence in Likoni makes them a trusted centre of COVID-19 relief for many families that are barely able to survive.Because of the COVID-19 crisis, Likoni has been locked down cutting off access to work and extended support for Likoni families, making it difficult to obtain food and medical help. There is no food bank or universal health care in Likoni. If the families do not have money to pay for food, they do not eat. It is the same situation with medical care. If the family cannot pay, they do not receive the medical care they require. Without these, they won’t survive regardless of the COVID-19 virus. People are scared and helpless and Education for Life is a lifeline in this turbulent time.
Urgent Needs
Education for Life is providing COVID-19 relief by making it possible for people to take care of their basic needs. EFL is arranging for them to purchase food from a local food kiosk (small food stores with limited supplies) or sending money via M-pesa (transfer through cell phones) to allow people to pay medical bills and buy food. We are also addressing the emotional and mental toll this is taking on the families. EFL is part of a local church which is electronically sending out sermons and arranging for digital bible studies. We are contacting the families in the area providing emotional and mental support via cell phone and other digital platforms.
