Three Peaks Recreational Outreach is an outdoor ministry in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Primarily, we work with young adults who have aged out of government-funded services and no longer have access to the resources they once had. Many of them become trapped in a destructive community of homelessness, mental illness, and substance abuse. We want to break that cycle by building a healthy community that encourages positive self-perceptions and a deep faith that can spur change in their lives.
Recently, we launched our second season of outdoor Apex trips! On the first trip, we hiked to Lindeman Lake where we talked about recognizing God’s presence in the emotions we experience in the midst of struggles. On our second trip, our community of participants doubled! We came across a lake to a quiet creek, where we talked about how to be grateful for those struggles. Together, we recognized that God created a community to be a support system when practicing gratitude is hard to do.
Here is a story of success and celebration from last year. One participant (we’ll call her Jane), has come to most of our events. Jane has been a very consistent member of our growing community and has grown so much since our launch last May. When we met Jane, she told us dramatic stories of past experiences. She was afraid that, if her life wasn’t exciting enough, we would abandon her. Jane would shut down during deep conversations around healing and faith, as she wasn’t ready to accept these things.
This year, Jane worked on her Early Childhood Education certificate at a local school, and is nearly completed! Even though adjusting to school came with challenges, Jane leaned into our community for support. She has moved from a community housing program into her own apartment! We can see the genuine connection between Jane and Three Peaks staff and volunteers, where we use honesty rather than extravagant stories. Jane has even been attending church and a young adult group with many of our staff. It has been incredible to see Jane grow, excel in school, and begin investing and participating in the Three Peaks community.
Jane’s story is only one of many remarkable stories. God’s hand is over Three Peaks. We can see Him working through this ministry and in the hearts of our participants. Please consider supporting this work through financial gifts and ongoing prayers.PGJyLz4=
