Cambodia has faced significant challenges with the AIDS epidemic, which has deeply impacted communities and families across the country. The disease not only claims lives but also leaves behind a trail of social and economic devastation, as many families lose breadwinners and caregivers. Children orphaned by AIDS often face neglect, exploitation, or abandonment, while elderly relatives struggle to provide care without adequate support. Poverty exacerbates the crisis, as access to healthcare, life-saving antiretroviral treatments, and social services remains limited, especially in rural areas. The lack of resources and medical infrastructure has made it difficult to manage the disease effectively, leading to an ongoing cycle of suffering and marginalization for the most vulnerable populations.
Rescue Cambodia is a sanctuary for vulnerable communities, and currently providing refuge and hope to over 425 orphaned children, 20+ adults living with HIV/AIDS, and 25+ elderly women who have nowhere else to turn. Founded in 2003 by Marie Ens and Cambodian partners, the organization emerged from a vision to offer shelter, care, and a future for those left destitute by illness, poverty, and social displacement. What began with modest thatch-roofed homes has evolved into a comprehensive support network across three locations in Cambodia—Bek Chan, Mongkol Borey, and Pailin—where children and adults receive holistic care, education, and a sense of belonging.
At the heart of Rescue Cambodia's efforts is a commitment to a family-centered approach, ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, grows up in a nurturing environment. Each child lives in a house with a dedicated Cambodian house mother, fostering a sense of stability and love that many have never experienced. The centers also include specialized housing for elderly women who have been "orphaned" by the loss of their families, as well as facilities for families living with HIV/AIDS. Beyond basic care, the centers emphasize education and skills training, with onsite schools and vocational programs to equip residents for a brighter future. For graduates, "House of New Dreams" dormitories in Phnom Penh and Sisophon provide a launchpad for pursuing higher education or vocational aspirations.
The organization’s impact extends beyond the immediate needs of its residents, nurturing a generation of Cambodian leaders committed to uplifting their communities. With a dedicated staff of over 100 Cambodian caregivers, educators, and support workers, Rescue Cambodia prioritizes cultural identity and local empowerment. The goal is not just to provide care but to instill pride in being Cambodian and equip individuals to transform their society from within. Despite the challenges, including cultural barriers and the lingering effects of past conflicts, Rescue Cambodia remains a place where the once-hopeless can find a future filled with possibilities.
