The earthquake in Turkey and Northern Syria has claimed the lives of over 55,000 people and left thousands more homeless. Fida is responding to this urgent need by helping earthquake survivors through church partners in Turkey. Several churches operate in the earthquake area and are providing much needed relief.
Fida’s partners with a denomination in Turkey that has 42 congregations across the country.
Several local parishes operate in the earthquake area, and are involved in the relief work. The denomination sent help soon after the earthquake hit to badly affected areas, including a field kitchen and rescue teams.
Many churches are accommodating those who are left without housing. Planes take aid to the earthquake affected areas and also transport those who have lost their homes away to safety, says a Fida employee who lives in the Alanya area. There, too, the quake shook buildings, but the actual area of destruction is about 600 kilometres away in southeastern Turkey and northern Syria.
Basic necessities such as blankets, tents, and heating fuel, as well as clean water and food, are desperately needed. The humanitarian situation is made especially dangerous by winter weather.
